Jack's current residence, completed in 2003, is a contemporary take on a simple
Italian farmhouse. Set at the base of a wooded draw in the hills south of Calistoga,
the house and garden are a comfortable blend of earthy materials: rusted steel,
warm-toned stucco, and natural stone from Mexico and Napa. In the main outdoor
entertaining area, we incorporated a lap pool and stone pool deck, and a raised dining
terrace under a custom steel shade structure. Both levels benefit from views of the
surrounding landscape across the existing one-acre pond, and are served by a built-in
grill, pizza oven, and outdoor fireplace.
Elsewhere on the property, we used a series of solid steel plate landscape walls
to create a terraced vegetable/citrus garden stepping up an arroyo to a flagstone
terrace under a rustic pole pergola. In the wet season, a natural spring dribbles
into a clay brick cistern nestled into a hillside grotto, before working its way
downhill to the pond.
